JOE DURICA

Stick It Wear?!TM creator and designer Joe Durica grew up in Chicago watching the reverent battles between McEnroe, Connors, Lendl and Becker. His first tennis hero was John McEnroe while his Czechoslovak emigrate parent's hero was the rival Ivan Lendl. That matchup made for some colorful finals and Super Saturdays. Joe's early years were dominated by drawing, thoughts of throwing gigantic fits of bottled up passion followed by majestic drop volleys (a la The Mac Attack), and the cultural tractor beam of ‘Star Wars’.

His early inspirations served as a foundation to studies in art, graphic design and film. Upon academic completion, Joe had career forays into: Filmmaker, Comic Book Artist where he wrote and illustrated several titles for the National Anti-Drug Campaign, Fine Artist having gallery shows and selling commissioned pieces, Corporate Creative Director, and Fashion Designer where co-founded a fashion sport label that sold garments to high end boutiques in Japan and creating custom tops for the New York Knicks dance squad and Madison Square Garden retail.

Stick It Wear?! seems to have been born from all of Joe’s interests— from the clean designer lines to the study of human anatomy and back to tennis. Durica comments, “Design to me is the study of patterns in life and our organization of electrical signals. This philosophy can be extended to anything including psychology for instance, which I am a big fan of. Psychology is a study of inner world pattern making. We have templates and set to create (our lives) from that point.”

Much of the Stick It Wear?! collection is inspired from the refined Olympic pictograms and patterns of the 60s and 70s. The apparel’s iconic logos distill heroic sporting moments and movements.  The modernized stick icons also evoke an elegance that translates into just being simple and cute. In concert with the austere figures, Stick It Wear?! uses colors and garment fit to quietly announce the arrival of the sophisticated die hard fan.

From his creation of the website and model photography to the meticulous character designs and then to the screening of shirts from time to time, Stick It Wear?!, based in Southern California is Joe Durica’s vision expressed.

ART WORKS BY JOE DURICA

Entering the Province of Heaven
acrylic, oil, wood on canvas
82 x 82"
2005

Joe Durica comments, "I saw this picture of James Blake and it captivated me. He flew out of the air like Batman to overhead the ball. It also reminded me of Michael Jordan and how he used his will to manifest his physical reality.

I created this painting as a representation of how I see myself as a player (of life). Of course I do not see myself as James or having his gifts, but I feel the same energy when approaching a shot. The pole down the middle is my version of 'God' or 'Truth'. There are many colors in this Godstick representing the variations in the universe, but it is a line which can divide. Either you are truthful or you are not. Either you will surrender to the overhead or buckle in fear and choke. To make the shot which is on the other side of the Godstick, the Blake character must defeat the walls being 'fear' presented before him.

Man and Woman are also divided by the Godstick but they lay together on the plane of the canvas. This painting is ultimately about where we decide to focus on divisions. We are two genders but one species or Being. As athletes of Life, when we decide to relax, we can execute our plays effortlessly."
